Online Poker in Argentina: Rooms, Legality, Payments and Taxes

Updated October 2026. This guide is for information only and is not legal or tax advice.

You can play online poker in Argentina, and the country is in fact one of the most active poker markets in Latin America. The Argentine peculiarity is that gambling is regulated province by province: the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires, among others, have issued online gambling licences since 2021, while international poker rooms continue to accept Argentine players from anywhere in the country. On top of that come the currency controls, which shape how you deposit and withdraw more than in any other country in the region. This guide explains the legal framework as it stands at the time of this update, which rooms you can use, how to move money, what happens with taxes and which mistakes to avoid.

Is online poker legal in Argentina?

In Argentina, gambling regulation is the responsibility of each province and of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Since 2021 several jurisdictions have licensed online betting and casino operators (the City of Buenos Aires through LOTBA and the Province of Buenos Aires through its lottery institute, among the first), with local domains and residency checks. Poker with a provincial licence exists but is limited: few tables and little traffic compared with the international networks.

For the player, the situation is this:

  • Playing at an international room is not sanctioned. Provincial rules regulate and penalise the unlicensed supply of gambling, not the player's participation. No rule punishes an Argentine for holding an account at PokerStars, WPT Global or Poker King.
  • International rooms do not answer to Argentine regulators. Your protection is the licence the room holds in its jurisdiction and its track record. Choose rooms with years of history and verifiable payouts.
  • Provincially licensed platforms offer local protection and peso payments, but their poker is marginal and without rakeback.
  • The minimum age is 18 in every jurisdiction, and every room verifies identity and age before the first withdrawal.

How to deposit and withdraw from Argentina

This is the trickiest point for the Argentine player. Restrictions on access to foreign currency, surcharges on spending abroad and the blocks many banks apply to gambling merchants make cards an unreliable option. The routes that actually work:

  • Cryptocurrencies. By far the most used in Argentina: you buy them in pesos on a local exchange, deposit them at the room and withdrawals come back the same way in minutes. CoinPoker runs entirely this way and several other rooms accept crypto. Use stablecoins if you do not want to take on volatility.
  • E-wallets (Skrill, Neteller, AstroPay): funded with local methods, then used to deposit and withdraw. They avoid bank declines; check conversion fees.
  • Cards: work at some rooms, with surcharges for spending abroad and a risk of being declined. If your bank blocks the charge, do not insist.
  • International transfers: slow, expensive and subject to limits. Only for large amounts and at rooms that accept them.

Surcharges and taxes on payments abroad have changed several times in recent years; check the rules in force before choosing a method. And, as everywhere: withdraw by the same method you deposited with and verify your account (DNI and proof of address) on day one.

Taxes on poker winnings in Argentina

Argentina taxes prizes from games of chance and betting. When the prize is paid by an operator with an Argentine licence, the operator applies the corresponding withholding. Winnings from international rooms are not withheld at source; their tax treatment depends on each taxpayer's situation and on the national and provincial rules in force, which change frequently. If you play regularly or for significant amounts, consult an accountant: this guide is no substitute for professional advice.

Tips for playing online poker from Argentina

  1. Timing. Argentina is four to five hours behind central Europe depending on the season, so the European afternoon coincides with Argentine midday and the American night with the Argentine night. The fullest tables are usually between 7 pm and 1 am.
  2. Currency and conversion. Rooms operate in dollars or euros. With inflation and the exchange rate, deposit sensible amounts and avoid repeated conversions: each one costs a fee.
  3. Rakeback from day one. Sign up through Habwin before opening the room account; it cannot be activated on an existing account.
  4. Community. Argentina has a huge poker community and many professional players. Low-stakes tables in local hours are competitive; start below your level.
  5. One account per room and never in someone else's name: it leads to closure and confiscation.
  6. Deposit limits. Set them inside the room, especially if you play from your phone.

If you are starting out, review the basic rules of poker, the hand rankings and the types of poker; if you will play from your phone, which poker app to choose.
